  • Geothermal Heat Pumps (Ground-Source Heat Pumps) are electrically powered heating and cooling systems which transfer heat to and from the earth via a refrigeration process. Geothermal Heat Pumps have been in operation for over 40 years and operate on the same principle as your household refrigerator or air conditioner.   A refrigerator keeps your food cool by drawing heat from the interior of the refrigerator and then transfers this heat to the coils on the outside. A geothermal heat pump works in a similar manner.   In the winter, fluid circulating through the system’s earth loop absorbs heat and carries it to the home.  The indoor unit compresses the heat to a higher temperature and distributes it throughout the home.  In the summer, the system reverses, pulling heat from the home, carrying it through the earth loop and depositing it in the cooler earth. A geothermal heat pump operates as an efficient and environmentally friendly air conditioner.  On most models of Geothermal Heat Pumps domestic hot water can be pre-heated any time the heat pump operates. With the Synergy 3-D model from WaterFurnace, all three functions – forced air heat, forced air cooling, and hydronic water heating (radiant floor heat/domestic hot water pre-heat) can be accomplished out of one unit.
  • Most geothermal systems require vertical drilling, unless the location and the design permit for horizontal (trench) installation. The soil properties and the thermal performance of rocks vary widely and the size of the geothermal system and the ground conditions at the installation site will dictate how much drilling or trenching will be required.
  • Thousands of smart homeowners have switched to a WaterFurnace geothermal comfort system.  That’s because geothermal systems use the free, renewable energy found in your own backyard and they operate at a fraction of the cost of any other solution.
  • A WaterFurnace geothermal system provides complete heatingand coolingcomfort for your home with a single unit.  And because the system does not burn fossil fuels, there are no fumes or carbon monoxide concerns.  Throughout the year, outdoor temperatures fluctuate with the changing seasons, but deep within the ground, temperatures do not.  At depths below 30 feet (10 meters), ground temperature stays a constant 42 - 55 deg F. (6-12° C) year-round.
  • Geothermal Heat pumps are available for both commercial and residential heating and cooling systems in a variety of output capacities, which can accommodate any building design.
  • RIG & DRILLING INFORMATION

  • Terralta Inc. –Geothermal Division is listed as a Qualified Firm and Drilling Firm in accordance with the CGC -Canadian Geo-exchange Coalition. Terralta’s 12 years experience, in designing and installing both vertical and horizontal loop systems in residential and commercial applications ensures the project is completed with the highest level of professionalism and integrity. Using our experience and drilling techniques available to us we have the means to deal with difficult site limitations and a variety of drilling conditions. Our drilling system is designed for minimal site disturbance in tight locations such as retrofitting an urban residential lot. Measuring 8’ wide by 17’ long, our drilling system can access very tight sites and perform the functions of drilling, loading holes and back-grouting the vertical ground loop system. See the Gallery for pictures of Terralta’s Rig at work. Should the project require a different drilling technology regarding depth capacity or drilling type such as (RC) Reverse Circulation or Sonic Drilling, we have worked with numerous drilling contractors who can perform such functions with our supervision and under our Accreditations.
  • We have the qualifications to complete projects in accordance with CGC requirements to earn certification of the Geo-Exchange system to qualify the system for Grant Programs such as the Federal Eco-Energy Retrofit Program for residential projects. Having an Accredited Qualified Firm and Drilling Firm perform the vertical loop drilling and installation, ensures compliance and receipt of these grants. See Geo-Exchange website and Eco-energy Retrofit Program websites in our Links section for verification.
